Jacob Collier is a British singer, composer, producer, multi-instrumentalist, and educator. His music blends jazz with other genres, often featuring close harmony and reharmonizations. Jacob Collier is widely considered a musical genius by many. He is celebrated for his exceptional musical talent, innovative arrangements, and virtuosity, with some even dubbing him the “Mozart of Gen Z”.
A few months ago, he was challenged to improvise a piece of music with an orchestra, with no plan, no sheet music, no rehearsal, and no prior discussion. Here’s what happened.

Over the past few years Jacob Collier has been experimenting with what he calls the ‘Audience Choir’, where he uses his audiences like an instrument, conducting live improvisations. They initially started quite simple, but he’s been continuously expanding their scope, most recently including full chromatic modulations and cluster chords. It really is ingenious, and in this video I break down exactly how it works.

During the Fall of 2016 Jacob performed with musicians from MIT, Berklee College of Music, New England Conservatory, Boston Arts Academy, and UNH.
