The US-China trade war is spiralling fast. With tit-for-tat tariffs reaching unprecedented levels—145% by the US and 125% by China—the world’s two biggest economies have locked horns in what is fast becoming an economic standoff. Beijing has declared its latest tariff hike its final move, calling the escalating figures “a joke.” While Trump claims a deal is possible, Xi Jinping has made clear China will not compromise under pressure. Beyond tariffs, China is targeting US businesses, travellers, and students. As both sides dig in, the global economy hangs in the balance.
This week, US President Donald Trump brought in tariffs against China to strong-arm the growing superpower into submission and strengthen American markets. But Beijing hit back, raising its own tariffs, escalating a trade war that could affect both countries. Trump is betting that tariffs will make America, and the American people, richer. But does anyone win in a trade war? In this episode, Lucy Hockings speaks to the BBC World Service Asia/Pacific editor Micky Bristow, and Ritika Gupta, a North America business correspondent, about why Trump loves tariffs and what impact a trade war between China and America could have on the global economy. 0:00 Donald Trump loves tariffs 1:28 What is a tariff? 2:31 What impact did Trump’s tariff plans have? 3:40 Tariffs and China 5:20 Why China doesn’t want a trade war 6:41 Trade war heating up 7:24 What tariffs on the US has China announced? 8:10 How tariffs could impact the Chinese economy 10:01 Can the US halt China’s economic rise? 11:54 Can the US and China reach a deal? 12:45 How could US consumers be affected? 13:54 Will Xi Jinping bend? 15:12 Nationalistic fervour 16:10 Goodbye

Does Donald Trump have a foreign policy strategy? Many assume he is too disruptive to follow one. But it might not be so simple. Plenty of his actions do align with established strategic thinking – which could help us anticipate what comes next. In this video, DW’s Richard Walker unpacks three theories: 1) That Trump is a foreign policy ‘Realist’ 2) That he plans to attempt a diplomatic coup known as a ‘Reverse Kissinger’ 3) That he is pursuing a vision of geopolitical ‘Spheres of Influence’ Historian of US foreign policy Stephen Wertheim spells out each strategy, the goals and the risks versus rewards. And analysts Gautam Chikermane, Liana Fix, Alexander Gabuev, and Amanda Hsiao examine the consequences for the rest of the world, with a special focus on Europe, India, Russia, Ukraine, China, and Taiwan.
